Elizabeth A. Whitman focuses her practice in business, securities, commercial real estate, and healthcare matters. Her creative, yet detail-oriented, approach and broad legal experience enable her to find solutions to some of her clients’ most complex legal challenges.

With twelve years of in-house corporate counsel experience for both public and private national companies, including nearly a decade as in-house General Counsel, Elizabeth is uniquely qualified to serve as outside general counsel for her clients. She has extensive experience in healthcare law and regulation, having served as outside counsel and in-house General Counsel for companies in the senior housing, adult day care, and nursing home businesses.

In addition to her general counsel experience, Elizabeth, who has been an attorney since 1985, has more than 20 years of experience as an attorney in business, real estate and financial transactions, and securities law, including experience with large, international law firms in New York City and Columbus, Ohio. Elizabeth’s administrative law and regulatory experience includes having served as an Administrative Law Judge in Washington, DC.

Elizabeth studied music at Indiana University and received her B.F.A. with honors in music from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She received J.D. cum laude from The Ohio State University, where she served as Managing Editor of the Ohio State Law Journal. She received her LL.M. in Securities and Financial Regulation with distinction from Georgetown University, where she received a CALI Award for her work in broker-dealer regulation. Elizabeth also has completed advanced training in Administrative Law through the National Judicial College in Reno, Nevada.

Active in professional organizations, Elizabeth has served as Chair of the Real Estate Committee of the Association of Corporate Counsel, an international organization of more than 30,000 in-house counsel. She currently is on securities law subcommittees of the Business Law Section of the American Bar Association and has served on the drafting committees for subcommittee comment letters to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Elizabeth also has 25 years of experience as a Board member and as Secretary of both private companies and not-for-profit organizations. She has spoken at numerous seminars and conferences throughout the country and has authored many articles about real estate transactions, real estate taxation and securities, including articles on administrative law and real estate securities, which were published in law journals. While serving as in-house General Counsel, Elizabeth twice was been featured in the Association of Corporate Counsel’s member publication ACC Docket, which reaches almost 90,000 attorneys world-wide.

In addition to her professional activities, Elizabeth can be found volunteering for education, arts, and civic organizations. Currently, she serves as Secretary of the Board of Inverness Recreation Club and is a certified official for the Montgomery County Swim League. Trained as a concert violinist, in her free time, Elizabeth enjoys music, fitness activities, gardening, and the pursuit of lifelong learning with her husband and son.

Elizabeth is admitted to practice law in Maryland, District of Columbia, New York, and Ohio as well as the United States Supreme Court and several other federal courts. She also is a licensed Maryland real estate broker.
